After asking lots of my twitter mates and some other running, cycling athletes I tried something new for my latest long run of 20 miles. Two days before my run I ate my large carb meal of pasta with chicken. The body processes food from anywhere 24 to 48 hours. I knew that on Saturday I was going to eat a late dinner, so I opted for my beg carb meal on Friday evening. On Saturday I had sushi for lunch (which I love and never upsets my stomach). For dinner I ate chicken and potatoes, but an average portion size. Also, I did not eat anything after 7 pm Saturday.</p>
<p>I started increasing my liquid intake Friday. Mostly with water. On Saturday I drank Gatorade, the low cal kind. I am not crazy about the taste of water after about one litre so I chose something I would drink more of.</p>
<p>Sunday morning I ate toast with peanut butter and 1/2 banana for the trip into my run. Also I had myself a cup of coffee, something I normally drink in the morning. During my previous long run I only consumed about 1 litre of water. This week I topped up with gatorade and refilled along the way. I probably drank 4 bottles over 3.5 hours. On the advice of a seasoned marathoner friend of mine I took along a fig newton which I ate at the 12 mile mark. With about 3 miles to go I popped a Powerbar gel. That was it. I ran steady and finished strong. </p>

		<title>This Run Sucked! So What Went Wrong?</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After a truly bad long run, one that has left me with a sore left knee, calf muscles that hours later are still cramping, and a lot lighter from dehydration, a runner gets starts to ask questions. Our clinic group run was a scheduled 29 km (18 miles). It was our longest run to date, and with just under 2 months before our marathon, was an important milestone to check our progress. I felt fine this morning, though a little tired, but hey it is Sunday morning. I started out good, though a little faster than I would have liked. Ideally I wanted to maintain a 6:30 min/km pace. We were probably doing around 6:12 on average. Not really a big difference at first glance, but could be as the run mileage grows larger.</p>
<p>Around 13 km we began a trail of undulating hills. My left knee felt cold as did my right. My left foot is still not recovered from months of metatarsal pain, so I know I favour it, and probably pronate more than the other foot. At the turn around, I was losing steam. For breakfast, I ate only a small bowl of cereal, grabbed some power gels and off I went. Big mistake. I was starving 12 km into the run and the power gel was making me wanna vomit.</p>
<p>To make a long story short, I cut my 29 km back to 25 km. Walked probably 3 km of it. Felt crappy. So what to change moving forward:</p>
<p>Preparation:</p>
<p>1) Don&#8217;t take time off from training without expecting to slip backwards in fitness.<br />
2) The day before, don&#8217;t quaff beer and eat fried foods<br />
3) Hydrate the day before and eat healthy<br />
4) Don&#8217;t stop stretching each day . . ever!<br />
5) Don&#8217;t go out fast and blab to your running mates about your holidays. Conserve your energy<br />
6) Wear the damn compression socks that really prevents calf muscles from cramping from lactic acid<br />
7) Eat a proper pre run breakfast, not just a snack<br />
8) Don&#8217;t overdress, but don&#8217;t undress either. Being cold and miserable is not fun!<br />
9) Go back out there. Remember we all have setbacks in training. Such is the life of the runner or cyclist.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>21:47 min over 5 km or (3mi). Pace = 4:21/km or (7:15/mi) Good temperature and overcast. Legs felt good. I started out fast (4/km pace) and slowed for the 2nd kilometer. By the 3rd kilometer I was comfortably running under my tempo pace in training. With about 400 meters to go I picked up the pace and sprinted the last 100 meters. I placed myself at the front of the starting line and had a quick getaway. I picked off a few runners along the way, but really never had anyone breathing down my neck. There was one guy who started out really quick, but I spotted him at about 3 km. I set my sights on catching him and by kilometer 4 I was running alongside him. I accelerated down the home stretch and he didn&#8217;t respond. I  could see from his body language he was struggling to maintain his race pace. This is certainly my best 5 km distance race to date. I placed 4th in my Age Group and 8th overall. Pleased with the results. My next race will be in Florida in February.</p>
